Here at Greenville Mom Collective we love to feature local businesses and this week. In honor of National Cheerleading Week, we had the privilege to check out a brand new cheer academy in the upstate, Firegem Cheer Academy! Founded by former collegiate cheer coach, Tori Cox, Firegem is sure to be a favorite for moms and kids in our area!
We had the chance to chat with Tori and hear a bit more about how Firegem came to be.
Tell us a little bit about you & your background
“I didn’t start cheering until college” Tori said, “I started coaching all through college and cheering on my college team.”
Tori grew up in the gym, competing in both gymnastics (USAG) and power tumbling (USTA), at the national level, starting in elementary school all the way through high school graduation. But it wasn’t until she began attending the University of Northern Iowa that she discovered her love for competitive cheer, joining the collegiate team. While cheering for UNI, she also cheered competitively on a level 6 international open co-ed team for the Iowa All Stars. After graduating university she decided to further her competitive cheer career and turned to coaching.
She then went on to coach college cheer teams for six years including at universities in Missouri, Arkansas, and locally at USC Upstate. Once that season came to an end she knew her love of cheer and coaching experience could be put to good use. “This opportunity practically fell in my lap” said Tori.
Who is Firegem for?
Girls and boys ages 4-18 are welcomed at Firegem Cheer Academy. Kids must be potty trained and be comfortable being away from parents for an hour. There is a watching area in the front where parents can watch the classes live streamed from just a few feet away.
There is also no need to have cheer experience! Whether a beginner just getting started in the cheerleading world or a seasoned athlete looking for more competitive coaching, you’ll find a place at Firegem!
From the youngest to oldest each child will be actively training and participating in regional competitions. This is more than just game day cheerleading!
What sets Firegem a part from other programs in the Upstate?
“Our values!” was Tori’s immediate response. Although there are several great programs in the area, the world of cheerleading can so often be cut throat and catty. Tori is ready to do something new and aims to create an atmosphere of “Empowerment, Inclusion, & Respect!” If you are looking for a place where your children are not only challenged to be the best version of themselves but will also learn values that’ll impact them for the rest of their lives, Firegem could be the place for your family!
We are so excited for this new upstate business! For more details on class times and how to register visit: www.firegemcheer.com
